I just signed up to volunteer at a nearby city's Pride event next weekend.

that is sorta true...our team had no coach and the organisation was well if no coach then sorry no team...

It's hard to find people willing and capable to step up, but having those moments of community are really important! I'm glad you can be there for your son and his friends.

In the past, I volunteered with the local animal shelter, helping set up their booth and talk with festival goers.

This year, I saw the event itself was low on volunteers, so I signed up for "food tent." They're only trying to get two volunteers, so I'm picturing something snack-y? Like handing out granola bars or something? I'll report back!

also knowing Mr Covfefe attitude towards those kinds of events - is there any sense of (I'm not quite certain of the word) maybe anxiety or dread within your city or the organisers over the staging of the event

It's hard to say. They've definitely felt the impacts of it -- some long-time sponsors have dropped out -- but the capitol city had its Pride event this past weekend, and it went really well, so I think everyone's hopeful!

I got into volunteering because my work gives us paid time off specifically to do it, and heck if I'm going to turn down an opportunity to get paid to not be at work.

I tend to find I prefer events, because everyone has something they're focused on, so it makes the time go by faster and feel less like you have to make small talk with randos lol.

i wish but there's not much you can do where i live other than help at like church events there's a film festival here that my city somehow finds the money for, which invites like one A-list actor per year and i wanted to apply to be a volunteer but i missed the deadline. though in the end i dodged a bullet because it turned out a mess due to the festival director being misogynistic

Aw, that has to have some complicated feelings. Like it would have been fun to have access to do something new, but also the runner sucks, but that doesn't mean the festival as a whole sucks.... what a mess.

Hopefully you can do it in the future with a less messy director!
