I’ve been recently having jaw issues, popping painfully when I yawn, uncomfortable popping when I chew. And this afternoon I was eating and as I went to take another bite I realized I couldn’t get my mouth around the food, I also can’t move food to the side of my mouth to chew either. My mom says it sounds like a dislocated jaw, I’ve taken some Motrin and have been putting heat on it to relax the muscles but nothing so far has really helped. It’s not painful, so whatever it is it’s not too severe I guess, it’s just very difficult to eat.

Any suggestions?

Are you able to go to a doctor?

Also, I think i've experienced something similar to that before, but not as serious i think. Are you able to shift your mouth around to close it? Like, instead of up down, moving your mouth to the side and then up? I would definitely try to check with a doctor though.

If it's dislocated, the longer it's out of place, the harder it is to get it back and to stay back in place. Your best bet is going to be a doctor, the sooner the better. You can cause arthritis and other issues in the temporomandibular joint if you don't get things sorted out.

I have a genetic condition where I dislocate joints all the time, my jaw being one of them.

My mom didn’t seem to worried about it when I told her so that made me feel like a doctor wasn’t really necessary I guess, I think I may ask her about that though because this is something that really scares me, even if it doesn’t hurt. I can close my mouth all the way, and I can smile, it’s just when I go to put something in my mouth I can’t seem to open all the way, just maybe a tiny bite size of food can fit and then I have to use a fork to maneuver the food to the side so I can chew. To be honest I’m really scared to move my jaw side to side, I’m scared it will make it worse or my jaw will be completely stuck.

Thanks for answering, I’ll talk to my mom about the doctor.

Probably for the best. I have permanent TMJ issues from years of problems with my own jaw.
I think my worst dislocation was when I tried to eat pizza after jaw surgery. My jaw was stuck wide open for five minutes before I finally managed to get it back in place.

I mean, and that's without the details of the surgery. They broke both sides of my jaw and slid them apart to make my lower jaw longer. Had my jaw rubber-banded mostly shut for 6 weeks.

ohhh makes sense. yeah, my sister has the same problem then. mine was just it got stuck somewhere when opened, and shifting it worked for me. I would definitely go check with a doctor if you can. Let us know if you're okay!

@LiviaRaine @milk @LeeHoseok @Chahee just letting you know what’s going on.

I wasn’t able to get into see a doctor until today since I didn’t want to risk going to the ER. My dentist said that he’s unable to do anything for me so he’s sending me to a specialist, which is really frustrating because I just want to be back to normal lol. I have to cut my food into tiny, tiny pieces to be able to eat, can’t eat very chewy foods and I’m unable to brush my teeth very well. So hopefully the specialist can figure out what’s wrong, it’s still not painful only occasionally it aches but that’s just after I overuse my jaw for eating or yawning a lot.

I hope the specialist finds out what the issue is! I'm sure they will and soon enough you will be alright. how long do you have to wait to go? be easy on your mouth and take advil if you need to. This reminds me of the time I had to go also go to the clinic some months ago because I was having jaw pain. I didn't want to go because the pandemic. turns out it was my tooth causing irritation to my jaw and I had to go to the dentist after because it was an infection.

It could be a tmj issue which is what I also have. You could try getting a mouth guard/night guard for when you sleep. It's very possible that you might be grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw when you are not aware of it.

Thanks, I've been putting heat on it and taking some anti inflammatory medication to relax the muscles when it feels strained. I hope I can get into the specialist soon, right now it doesn't seem like that will happen because I don't think I can afford it so I may have to figure out something else.

Yeah my dentist mentioned that should be something I consider doing after all this is sorted out. For years I've grinded my teeth at night but didn't really know it could cause such things to happen until now.
