TW: Mentions of physical abuse emotional and sexual abuse as well as school violence. Please leave the thread if these themes may upset you for any reason and please take care of yourself
Some of these reasons may disturb you or you may find them unsettling, that's okay. What we shouldn't do is pretend that things like these are taboo and to never be mentioned because it only makes it harder for victims of varying kinds of abuse to speak up
Bedwetting far after the expected age to grow out of it (past 4-5 years old). I hear about this a lot in those with sexual abuse trauma and it's probably the worst because someone looking from the outside would seldm think "this kid must have something going on at home" and simply be disgusted by the action itself. I think more care should be taken in looking after children and the people you surround yourself with because a friend could be harming your child behind your back and you would never know.
Hypervigilance
This is a big one for me. A lot of us question the people we're around or think they have bad intentions even if we have enough conclusive evidence to know that they generally would want to protect you as much as you're trying to protect yourself. None of us can help it but I know for many survivors of especially physical and sexual abuse trauma this is inevitable to bite them in the ass at some point in life. It also can manifest as a phobia of things or people that remind you of a given incident that traumatized you
Dissociative Disorders
What many folks don't understand about trauma is that since it's not supposed to happen, the brain acts a bit frantically in trying to process such a large event. It can cause certain hormones to bee out of wack, PTSD, or dissociation. Dissociation or dissociative disorders are an umbrella of conditions all grouped by the shared characteristic of an individual experiencing dissociation in some way. It can manifest as
Dissociative Identity Disorder - A condition characterized by the experience of two or more distinct personality states in the brain (that in modern times have been referred to as alters) that often have their own thought patterns, traits of personal character, and unique memories
Derealization &/Or Depersonalization - Derealization is characterized by a state of disconnection from their surroundings and at times other people, and the thought that the outside world is not real (often described by patients as feeling like they "live inside a dream"). Depersonalization on the other hand has to do one's perception of their physical body or memories, as those with depersonalization often report feeling like a 3rd person spectator of their own life. Both can occur as one of symptoms or part of a larger disorder known as Derealization-Depersonalization Disorder and are often grouped together for their similar symptoms and equally similar causes as both may be caused by severe trauma of any kind.
Dissociative Amnesia - A memory related dissociative disorder often causing those who experience it to have patchy or completely lost memory of traumatic events due to a psychological response from the brain. This is especially important to be recognized as many survivors of sexual abuse can experience this amnesia in relation to traumatic events no matter how recent, which can unfortunately lead to the presumption that they're being untruthful of their experiences.
Random muscle spasms and/or tics
This isn't overlooked per se more so just under researched and often misdiagnosed because tics are strictly associated with Tourette's Syndrome by most. I myself have experienced small functional tics in my hands that are present almost only when in high stress and were prevalent early on in my Freshman year as that was the year I experienced my first (and thankfully as of present day my last) school shooting. I can honestly still hear faint screams of the kids frantically running and looking for some sort of place to evacuate the area. What's important is that after this I developed a small tic movement in my hands in which all my fingers bend forward (as in opposite of the direction they're intended to bend) and then subsequently backward.
I hope some of you who experience these feel a little less alone and as always please take care of yourself
