A ton of stuff came out, specifically for girl groups and as that's all I pretty much listen to, I'm a happy camper. From NewJeans singles, aespa first full album and its follow-up, ITZY returning with Lia, BABYMONSTER, izna, and MEOVV now officially debuting, IVE's production improvement in their latest SWITCH EP, fromis_9's long overdue comeback, Dreamcatcher's return to form, Irene's solo debut, Rose's new solo songs and on and on.
There's been a lot as you can see. But a select few stood out to me.
aespa - Armageddon
aespa has improved so much. They have found what works for them, they've found the magic, the production, the styling, the sound. The choreography is much improved. They are also following up with the banger that was Drama's release and still managed to EXCEL at everything and improve upon their strengths. Armageddon, aside from one song, is a perfect album for me. Supernova is my song of the year. For the people who have been sleeping on the AI, EDM, futuristic queens of Kpop, you are quite literally missing out on a group that's blazing their own path through an overly saturated market. No one can do what they can do. No one sounds like them. If imitators came out, they would most likely fall short.
IVE - SWITCH EP
I mean IVE has always been good let's be honest. They are popular, they are classy, everyone knows them and everyone loves them. This recent EP however, for me personally, the production quality somehow skyrocketed. I can hear everyone so clearly and everyone sounds so clean and beautiful. Although short, it's a banger tracklist that should not be missed. Recommend hearing this with good headphones (I mean any music really) but you can hear the love and care put into these songs. The magical girl concept has been perfected.
ITZY - GOLD
My oh my, can I just say that ITZY, a group mainly known for its overtly tacky style, a group that has a lot of songs I personally disliked and a group that's been putting out pretty divisive releases as of recently....well, they just shut everyone up with this new album. Lia is back and wow does she sound fantastic. Everyone sounds fantastic in a way that I have not heard ITZY before. I was honestly floored listening to this because this project right here is concrete proof that ITZY CAN perform, they CAN sing, and they ARE the definition of artists. Born to be on stage. This right here, is a perfect 5/5 album.
IRENE - Like a Flower
I was expecting this to be good cause come on its Irene for god sakes. What I was NOT expecting, is this album to be completely and utterly flawless to the point that it might just be the greatest ever solo project of an idol to have ever release. Irene, a veteran at this point, showcasing her love for R&B, weaving a beautiful picture with her own dreamy voice. Not afraid to showcase her vocal style and talents, and doing it with such ease. Not just a visual, as she highlights in her title track. This was her moment to shine coming from a group known for its singing, she demonstrates why Red Velvet can almost singlehandedly save us from the flat, generic tones of most acts.
BABYMONSTER
I want to highlight this group but NOT their album sorry lol. I just wanted to put it out there that I am well aware of this group and what they can offer. Problem is, they are under YG who is 10 years behind and are not truly allowing this group to breathe. I'm sure a lot of fans like them regardless, a lot of people like their songs, they get the views and the hits and likes. But man, behind their mostly generic music, are girls that have some of the most unique voices in 4th to 5th gen at the moment. From Ahyeon, Pharita, and Rami to rappers Ruka and Asa and everyone in-between, they have a good setup here. Just ya know....YG stuff. Although they still have solid hits, I do kinda like Forever and Click-Clack (except for the ending to that song that YG insists on doing). Rami is my bias.
Young Posse
Another group I want to highlight for the simple fact that they are sticking with their hip-hop and rap theme all throughout their releases and honoring the legends who came before. The group is really young, like young young, and the members are pretty much kids, but man whoever is making their instrumentals shoutouts to them. Really captures that hip-hop vibe and I think right now they are doing some good things. If they continue down this path they would have a lot of dedicated fans who appreciate this style of music. Cause let's be real, a lot of the Kpop acts now are doing every trend possible. It's refreshing to see a rookie group just stick to that initial idea for this long.
izna
This group is on my radar. They are rookies, but something about their music that even though is quite straightforward, it's really well made and has some solid hooks. It's nothing I haven't heard of before. Their choreography is a big standout to me however, go check them out if you haven't already. I believe they performed at the recent award show that was aired. It's a group I can see myself warming up to. As long as everything is in tip top shape and they keep releasing solid hits, then I'm on board. Good voices as well.
