Yes, I knew this. The way it was explained to me when I was in elementary school is:

A clownfish is a fish.
Two clownfish are fish.
A clownfish, goldfish, and catfish are fishes.

This tweet above does a similar thing, but I think this is one of the easier exceptions of English to wrap your head around.
