Europe has some really swampy capital cities (2 Viewers)

I thought I posted this already, but I can’t find it so here it is. If I’m wrong then oops.

The city names from Berlin and Paris are both historically thought to have come from a word meaning “swamp”, and both not from the language families associated with the place (Germanic for German, Romance for Paris).

The name for Berlin is more direct, it’s believed that it comes directly from a West Slavic language, coming from a root like berl- that meant swamp/marsh.

In the case of Paris it’s more indirect and historical. The name of Paris is thought to come from the name of a tribe which is of Celtic origin (Parisii). However, the extended name of Paris used by the Romans at the time was Lutetia Parisiorum. The Lutetia part is thought to have come from a Celtic root for swampy, which is feasible since the location was swampy. Over time, the Lutetia portion was dropped, leaving us with just the Paris part.
