It is indirectly based on elevation, since rivers flow from higher elevation to lower. So it’s possible you learned it as elevation because the Upper Canada/Egypt would have a higher elevation than Lower Canada/Egypt, causing the river to flow that way too. But to them, at least to Egypt, it was probably named specifically for the river flow in minds
