Chapter 1

The back door to the limo was wide open for Jordan Power and the rest of the bridal party to climb into. Jordan was about to head to a church in Aspen, Colorado, for her sister’s wedding, for which she was picked to be the maid of honor. Jordan’s daughter Ivy would be the flower girl, and Hailey’s stepson Jackson would be the ring bearer.

“Hailey, I’m so excited for you!” Jordan cried as Hailey sat down next to her in a gorgeous, backless white dress. “And it only took like ten years for you to find the one!”

“I’m totally ready,” Hailey admitted. “I just hope he’s actually at the altar. I’ve heard the horror stories about brides being jilted by their grooms.”

“Girl, you’ll be fine! Chris is a wonderful guy; you really can’t go wrong with him. I mean, has Chris ever, even once, done you wrong?”

“No,” Hailey said.

“And he adores you to pieces, does he not?”

“Yeah, he does.”

“Exactly! So, you have nothing to worry about!”

“Mommy?” Ivy asked her mother. “Do I look pretty?”

“Of course, you look beautiful!” Jordan fussed. “Didn’t we do affirmations in the mirror when I was getting your hair ready?”

“Oh, yeah. I’m going to be the best flower girl ever!”

Jordan laughed. “Yes, you are.”

When the ladies arrived at church, Jordan followed Ivy into the church to supervise her flower girl duties.

“Ivy, remember what we practiced,” Jordan said. “You go down the aisle to the beat of the music and scatter the petals all over. Got it?”

“Got it!” Ivy said proudly.

“You’ll do great, sweetheart,” Vincent, Jordan’s dad, assured his granddaughter.

When it was her cue, Ivy tried to walk slowly down the aisle as the Wedding March played. She tried her hardest not to screw this up, and it felt like forever until she reached the altar. When she did, her uncle-to-be gave her a fist bump.

“Great job, sweetie!” he said.

“Thanks, Uncle Chris!” Ivy said, beaming with relief that her job was done well. “Can I call you that?”

“Of course you can, Ives! I am about to marry your aunt, after all. Go sit with your Grammy, okay?”

“Okay!”

Jordan’s mom, Stacy, opened her arms when she saw Ivy running towards her, and Ivy leaned into her embrace.

“You did wonderfully!” Stacy praised her in a whisper. “I knew you could do it!”

The march continued to play as Hailey was ushered down the aisle by Vincent, tears of joy running down both of their faces.

“Congratulations,” he whispered in Hailey’s ear, patting her back before setting her free.

Jordan smiled as Hailey took Chris’s hands into hers, followed at once by the officiant starting the wedding ceremony.

“We are gathered here today to join this couple in holy matrimony,” he began. “Do you, Hailey Power, take Christopher Freeman to be your lawfully wedded husband?”

“I do,” Hailey said.

“And do you, Christopher Freeman, take Hailey Power to be your wife?”

“I do,” Chris said.

“You will now exchange your vows,” the officiant instructed.

Both vows were equally as emotional, especially when Hailey said she’d try to be the best stepmom ever for Jackson. This even made Chris tear up a little.

“Now, if there are any objections to this marriage, speak now or forever hold your peace,” the officiant said to the congregation. He waited thirty seconds before continuing. “And now, by the powers vested in me in the state of Colorado, Hailey and Christopher, you are now pronounced husband and wife! You my kiss the bride.”

Immediately following the ceremony, all the unmarried women gathered around Hailey to watch her throw the bouquet. Jordan had been to many weddings and never had any luck with catching it. Not that it mattered, anyway; she hated the idea of a lifelong commitment.

“Alright, ladies!” Hailey announced, grabbing everyone’s attention. “I’m about to throw the bouquet! Remember, the girl who catches it is next to find a partner!”

Jordan shook her head in doubt and was about to leave the room when the bouquet suddenly bounced off her shoulder and landed in Ivy’s hands.

“Mommy, look!” Ivy squealed. “You’re next!” She proudly held the bouquet out for her mother to take.

Jordan laughed at her daughter’s innocence as she took the flowers from her. “Just because we caught the flowers, doesn’t mean I’m getting y’all a new daddy anytime soon. You have to want to commit to a relationship first.”

“Jordan, congratulations!” Hailey exclaimed, throwing her arms around her elder sister. “I guess we’d better start planning the wedding, huh?”

Jordan rolled her eyes. “Yeah, for the 12th of NEVER! Besides, this is just a superstition.”

Chapter 2

In mid-July, Jordan started preparing Ivy for kindergarten. She would print out practice worksheets on letters, numbers, reading, writing, and all sorts of things she’ll learn at school. Ivy found this to be incredibly fun, and by the time Meet the Teacher day rolled around in August, she was really looking forward to her first day.

Jordan and Ivy arrived at the school in the midafternoon so Ivy could meet her new teacher. As she was walking in, holding Ivy’s hand, Jordan couldn’t help but notice a very cute guy and his adorable daughter going in the same direction. From the back, Jordan saw a head of blond curls and a tall, thin frame; the little girl holding his hand had blonde curls, too, but they were in pigtails. By the time she reached the door, the guy was holding it open for her.

“Thank you,” she said with a smile, going straight towards Mrs. Aiken’s classroom. When she arrived, there were already some other parents with their kids.

“Hi, come in!” Mrs. Aiken said warmly to both of them. “And you are?”

“I’m Jordan Power, and this is my daughter Ivy.”

“Nice! Ivy, welcome to my class! I’m Mrs. Aiken. Would you like to see where your table is?”

“Yes!” Ivy cheered.

After Ivy found her table, Jordan talked with the teacher while Ivy played with the various toys around the room.

Luke Hemmings was the next parent to enter the classroom, with his daughter Ravenna. Ravenna was also well-prepared for this level of schooling, having gotten some help from her teacher grandmother, Liz.

Luke waited for Mrs. Aiken to be done with her conversation before saying anything.

“Hey, I’m Luke Hemmings,” he said when he had the teacher’s attention. “I believe my daughter is in your class.”

“Let’s see…” she said, looking through her roster. “Hemmings… ah, here we go – Ravenna?”

“That’s the one! Where’s her table?”

“Right this way.”

Luke and Ravenna followed her to a table near the window, the same table Ivy had been assigned to. In fact, the two girls were to be seated right next to each other.

“Ravenna, this is your table!” Luke announced to his daughter. “Can you read your name?”

Ravenna ran her finger across her nametag. “Ravenna?” She said each syllable slowly so her brain could process what she was reading.

“Very good, darling; give me knuckles!” Luke and his daughter made their fists bump together. “Now, run along so I can speak with your teacher.”

Ivy was playing with Legos (at least, that’s what she read on the box) when another little girl sat beside her.

“Hi, I’m Ravenna,” the girl said. “Can we play with those together?”

“Yeah!” Ivy agreed, giving her some spare Legos. “I’m Ivy. I’m making a castle out of these blocks.”

Jordan wanted to get Ivy’s attention so they could leave and go home, but when she saw her and another girl playing nicely together, she almost didn’t want to interrupt them.

“Looks like my little girl is playing with yours,” a male voice said from her right side. This took Jordan by surprise.

“Oh! I didn’t see you there,” she said as she turned to look at him.

It was the same guy she’d seen outside the building. Along with the head of blond curls, he had striking blue eyes, and a goatee situated around an adorable smile.

“It’s quite alright. I’m Luke, by the way. It’s nice to meet you!”

“I’m Jordan, and likewise.”

The two of them shook hands, and Jordan asked about Luke’s daughter.

“That’s Ravenna. What’s your daughter’s name?”

“Ivy. I think I saw a Ravenna nametag at her table. Is that your Ravenna?”

Luke’s eyes widened. “Yes! I saw an Ivy nametag at that same table. Do you think we should arrange a group date so we can all get to know each other?”

“I imagine we can do that. How about tomorrow at two?”

“Ravenna has a vocal lesson at 1:30. Can we make it at three instead?”

“Yeah, that’ll work. What did you have in mind?”

“We could go to the beach and then Cold Stone,” he said.

“Oh, my kids love the beach! Let’s meet there. Tomorrow at three?”

“Yes, ma’am! We’ll see you then. Let’s exchange numbers, just in case something comes up.”

“Okay, sure. Ivy, let’s go!”

“Ravenna, we’re leaving now!” Luke called out.

“But we’re still playing!” Ravenna whined with a pout when she was next to Luke. Ivy joined her seconds later.

“I was having so much fun!” Ivy added in a similar tone.

“Ravenna, big girls don’t whine,” Luke scolded.

“And you girls can play again when we go to the beach tomorrow,” Jordan said.

Ivy lit up. “Yay, the beach!” she cheered. “I can’t wait already!”

“I figured you’d like that.”
