Summary: A faux car ride, jackson finally confesses in a roundabout way. Based off a dream I had.
Genre: Fluff
:yugyeomsmile::yugyeomsmile::yugyeomsmile::yugyeomsmile::yugyeomsmile:
“Jackson, seriously, where are we going?” you ask your university roommate, who is currently driving his beat-up, old-as-fuck Toyota down the highway. “You dragged me on this road trip and you’re not even telling me where you’re taking us.”

Jackson doesn’t turn to look at you (which is good because of driving safety) when he responds with, “It’s a secret! You’re my first roommate who lasted a year so I want to surprise you!” You laugh at that.

When you first met Jackson at university, you weren’t sure if he would be a good roommate. For one, he was loud. And for another, he was energetic. And, as you expected from an excitable teenage, athlete boy, he wasn’t all that neat. You liked your fair share of excitement, but sometimes naps in a clean place were just really nice. But, despite any differences, the two of you became close, very quickly. This brings you to now. At the crack of dawn on the first day of spring break, Jackson dragged you out of bed rambling something about a road trip.

You were half asleep when he folded you into the car with provisions (seriously, how did he even get those in there without you noticing) and started driving off to who knows where. Too tired to complain, or even know what was going on, you just napped in the car. When you woke up, however, was a completely different story. You were too dead before to really know what he was doing, so fully waking up in a car while on the road scared you shitless. Jackson would never let you live down almost jumping out of his car in fear.

It took a lot of coffee and a lot of explaining for you to stop glaring at Jackson like he just murdered your firstborn. It took him buying you breakfast for you to not make him turn the car around. In the end, Jackson prevails as the champion of convincing you to do things with him which brings you to this point, three hours into the car ride.

When he takes an exit, you sigh in relief. “Are we finally there?” You’re hopeful that this vacation that Jackson has planned has a place you can sleep in.

Your question is met with a laugh from Jackson. “Nah, we have like, two and a half more hours. My parents live around here and I figured I’d stop by to visit them.” Ah. You squirm a little uncomfortably. You’d never met his parents before, though you’ve heard many things about them. Which just makes you more nervous. Meeting an Olympic gymnast? A gold medalist and former fencer? You’re probably just making things more serious than you should, but that’s your talent.

Jackson doesn’t seem to notice your anxious state, though, rattling on and on about how his parents will love you. When he finally pulls up to a nice looking house a little ways from the highway, you feel like your palms are too sweaty to be considered socially acceptable, which is insane! It’s not like you’re Jackson’s partner or something. He’s just bringing a friend over.

Okay, maybe you can’t blame it on your anxiety completely, it’s definitely like…eighty percent because you’ve had a crush on Jackson since midterms. You couldn’t help it, he was just so supportive when you were stressed at ass-o-clock in the morning, instead of yelling or ignoring you because of his own exams. And his smile is just so pretty. And– no, you need to focus or else you’re going to collapse in tears if his mom so much as looks at you.

The big wooden door is open, only the screen door separates you from your doom. When Jackson rings the doorbell, you think you might cry. Jackson laughs at your face again. Does he have any sympathy? (Yes, you’re just overdramatic.)

“Seunie, you’re here!” A really, really pretty lady comes around and opens up the door, opening her arms and pulling Jackson into a hug. “So glad you decided to visit! And you’ve brought someone!”

She turns to you with a brilliant smile, you can tell where Jackson gets it from, and pulls you into a hug too as you introduce yourself. “I’m Sophia, it’s lovely to meet you! I’m glad Jackson has found a good roommate at college he can hang out with a lot. He tells me a lot about you.”

You smile a little awkwardly. She’s nice, but you still feel out of place now that Jackson’s father has come to the door as well and was talking to Jackson in low tones. When the two finally part, his dad turns to you with just as warm of a smile.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Wang Ruiji.” He shakes your hand instead, and you appreciate the familiarity of the action. “Please, come in. We have lunch ready.”

You follow the Wang family inside the house, Jackson standing to your side which you are thankful for. As much as his family seems nice, they’re still strangers to you. They lead you into the dining room, which is a big upgrade from your tiny dorm kitchen table. There are plates upon plates of food, and against your wishes, your stomach growls. Loud.

Jackson laughs brightly, wrapping a heavy arm around your shoulders and you ignore the fluttering and the growling of your stomach simultaneously. He pulls you to the table, sitting you down and your face feels like it might burst into flames at any moment. It appears his parents find it endearing, however, both of them laughing.

During lunch, though, it seems they’ve focused mainly on Jackson. Though they are kind, you can’t help but feel awkward around the obviously very close family. All throughout lunch you stay out of the conversations and let the tight-knit family have their time talking about things you are not a part of. It’s nice to see the Wang family interact with each other and show how close they are to each other, but you still feel out of place and sooner rather than later you finish up your plate and head towards the kitchen.

“Oh, you can just leave your plate if you want,” Sophia says, but you just shake your head with a smile.

“No, I couldn’t. You’ve been so hospitable to me, this is the least I can do,” you decline and even if Sophia frowns, you exit quickly.

Their kitchen is small but homely, and you turn on the tap to start washing the plates. Preoccupied with cleaning and hoping their conversation ends soon, you start on the pots in the sink as well. It’s only when a familiar arm wraps around your waist do you slow down your cleaning. “Hey,” Jackson starts a whine you are very used to, “what are you doing? Pay attention to me.”

You giggle a little bit, splashing a tiny bit of water onto his shirt, which Jackson huffs indignant at. “I’m washing dishes. Aren’t you in conversation with your parents? I thought you’d like to see them again.”

Jackson pouts, tucking his head into your neck. “But you haven’t said much at all! You should talk to them too.” You laugh gently again, pushing him away slightly with your shoulder.

“Jacks, it’s awkward,” you explain with a joking tone, although you’re not quite that lighthearted. “You came to visit them but I only know what you’ve told me and they definitely don’t know me.”

Jackson sighs loudly, and you flick more water at him. He pays no mind this time however, and just pulls you closer, reaching over to turn the tap off. “I saw them like, four days ago. I wanted to come so you could meet them.”

You can’t help but just stand there for a moment. “You…you wanted me to meet them?” You gesture to yourself, not flinching when water splashes onto your face. Jackson rolls his eyes in his best imitation of your third roommate, Jinyoung.

“Yeah, you idiot.” Jackson’s hands come to cup your face and he smiles but you’re still confused.

“But I’m just your roommate?” Jackson looks like he wants to strangle you, and his face comes closer to your own.

“I like you, dumbass. I like you a lot. The road trip was a farce so that you would come without worrying too much.” And this is when your brain dies. The sponge you were holding falls to the floor and you think you’re doing a great impression of a statue. I mean, how else are you supposed to react to your longtime roommate confessing to you? Jackson laughs at your expression, much happier than five seconds ago. “Can I kiss you?”

You’re still a little dead inside, but you can manage a nod, moments before Jackson finally leans in and presses his lips to yours. It’s a sweet kiss and you practically melt into his embrace. HIs arms wrap around your waist and you could stay there forever. “You’re so insanely stupid,” Jackson murmurs against you, and you laugh into his mouth.

“Sorry, Jacks. But we’re doing this now, yeah?’ You pull back with a smile, and Jackson whines as he refuses to let you go, leaning forward instead to keep his lips touching yours.

His hands stay on your waist as he whispers a “we are”, and then his mother pops his head into the kitchen.

“So you’re finally together then, Jiaer.” The two of you pull away like a child caught in a cookie jar, staring bashfully at Sophia. She just smiles brightly at you, eyes telling too much. “He’s been calling me at least once a week telling me about his roommate who he’s been meaning to ask out for quite frankly, months. So I’m glad you two are finally getting it on.”

Jackson whines petulantly. “Mom,” he draws out the vowel, and Sophia raises her hands in mock defense.

“Okay, okay, go do whatever you were doing, sorry,” she teases, sending you a wink before darting out of the kitchen before Jackson can complain any more.

You swear this is like a fever dream but when Jackson turns to you with a smile, you let him indulge in you a little longer.

btw what's "gn" short for?
gn is genderneutral, so i dont put any specific pronouns (she/him) nor do I describe like particularly feminine nor masculine traits
