Halfway through the year already, so lets go down my favorite girl group releases of 2023 and sorry, no IVE, TWICE, or IDLE here
Cupid - FIFTY FIFTY
I mean, come on, if this isn’t on your list for the best releases of 2023, then there’s something wrong. With both the original and English versions being sung and written by the group, I think this is like the perfect case of a simple and effective pop song. Nothing crazy, no offbeat rap section, no high budget, its just beautiful and relatable.
OMG - NewJeans
Many people prefer their other releases which are all great, I just picked this one because it grabbed me the most. With the mix of a great performance, cool verses and a catchy chorus (same could be said about all of their other songs) but still…. there’s something special about this song. At least to me.
Bon Voyage - Dreamcatcher
What can I even say about this masterpiece. Dreamcatcher literally just delivered one of their best songs to date. Its what the people want, with one of their best vocal performances off of a title track, combining soft and loud vocals and sounds… its what they do best and I think they killed it.
Generation - tripleS
Might be an odd choice to put up here but like… this song has been on my mind since it released. Its created in a way where the melody doesn’t stop no matter what. Pre chorus, chorus, verses, its just all one smooth transition throughout which is something thats lost on a lot of songs. It just sounds good. There’s a certain vibe that I like.
Salty and Sweet - aespa
Not the title track, but my goodness does this song scream aespa you know? Its very dark sounding, futuristic, gritty, and every aspect is perfected from the singing to the rapping which are both killer. To the performances and the outfits and the concept and the short little MV, its just everything is done so well. You really have to give them credit.
Shooting Star - XG
They just released Girl Gang which was incredible, but the song is too new for now. I’ll pick Shooting Star because well, its amazing. XG is up against some stiff competition with other girl groups this year but they are making it look easy. This song has a REAL chorus! Meaning, a fully written chorus, thats catchy, has a hook and doesn’t utter the same word 20 times. The MV is great, the performance is great, their whole sound and concept is just perfect for what they are.
Nugudom - CRAXY
Under represented for sure but thats the whole point of this song. Go out right now and listen to it. High value production, great length, chorus, verses, and CRAXY’s performances are, in my opinion, some of the best within girl groups. They excel a lot being the underdogs and it shows with Nugudom which I think its their best song to date.
