There are two major theories as for why there is no known life in the universe other than on planet earth. Both are based on the idea of natural selection and filtering. The idea is that on the way to life, there are many situations that need to happen and challenges to overcome, and only the best and most able manage to overcome it and survive. The first theory is that the reason no life exists on any other planet is because no other world was able to overcome the challenges and create life as we can see on earth. The other theory is that whatever this challenge is, it has yet to happen to our planet, meaning that it is possible we are in some way we are simply following the path of those who came before, likely on a route that will destroy life on earth just like life on any other planet has.
