There is a theory that part of the reason behind the Salem Witch Trials may be the fungus claviceps purpura, which contains a hallucinogen related to LSD. The fungus infected the rye used to make their bread, and some of the people of the village seemed to have some possible symptoms relating to this fungus, causing the community to become afraid of this effect they were unfamiliar with.

Or there was really witches in Salem. They brew up the fungus to make the villagers believe the ones who wrong them And made them look guilty.

Very interesting if true, but people back then often (and even now) regarded women or anything related to them in negative ways, hence the paranoia and superstition towards them (e.g. as witches).

That's true but this is more about why they suddenly believed there were witches among them, this could be the "sickness" that the witches were putting onto the villagers.
