Despite what most people would think, only a quarter of the Sahara Desert is covered by sand. The other 3/4 is composed by a variety of other substances, such as gravel and salt. Along with that fact, the Sahara Desert alternates between the arid climate we know and a lush, green ground where one could raise animals. However, the cycle takes 20,000 years to complete so it takes a very long time, and it depends on the tilt of the earth relative to the sun.
