Most of what we see is an illusion. In our eyes, we have 10-12 channels that bring different types of information to our brain. These include information such as a channel for contrast (in order to detect edges), a channel for color blobs, and more. With this very limited information our brain fills in the gaps and decides what belongs in the spaces without information.
