The refrigerator safety act was put into place in the 1950's to prevent children from suffocating in refrigerators. Previously they were only openable from the outside, leading to deaths of children who got stuck and suffocated.

Interesting, a few days ago I read a case about a young child who starved to death inside a closet, because she wasn't able to open the doors from the inside
After her death they changed closet doors as well, so children can open them when they are stuck inside
I think it also happened around 1950
