Right before the American Civil War, there were those in the US government pushing to start a war with Canada. They believed that the war would unite the north and the south against a common enemy. For their part, Canada was very on guard given that the US had tried to invade Canada 50 years prior (though Canada also tried to invade the US) during the War of 1812. Despite this, there were Canadian troops that volunteered to fight, mostly for the Union but some for the Confederacy.

My family knowledge is minimal tbh, it boils down to some ancestors were from some places at some point and a vague idea of what they did during WW2. Otherwise I’m pretty lost
