So like about two weeks ago I had German chocolate cake for the first time in my 15 year life. What's funny is that this isn't the first time my family had it they just had it when I wasn't born and for some reason never thought to make it again😭 amyway I wasn't expecting it to taste so good lol and i thought that the coconut had to be in the cake not the icing and that the cake HAD to be layered not a sheet cake
All and all it was very good, I only got two slices, my dad ate the rest and ill probably never have it again<⁠(⁠￣⁠︶⁠￣⁠)⁠>

I’ve never tried it tbh. Might be too sweet for me seeing as it’s American though. But maybe I could try it and reduce the sugar. Though not all American desserts are too sweet, but quite a few are.

So I did a little more research and apparently, it was made in Dallas, TX in 1957 by a man named George Clay. He used the baking chocolate sold by Baker's Chocolate Company owned by Samuel German, and then I guess they bought the rights to it or whatever and distributed it across America. (something happened to wear they now had it as their own but I'm sure it was a mutual agreement). Apparently, the sales of this company was increased by 73% since the widespread of the cake across the country!

And apparently it was originally called "German's Chocolate Cake" but then they dropped it and called it "German chocolate cake" so that's where the confusion comes from where it's a dish actually originating from Germany.

I've never heard of it, actually! I looked up some photos of it and it kind of looks like molten lava cake with powdered sugar on the shell (but in square form)

Oh, I guess the kind I saw were a different version. They were sponge cakes basically covered in chocolate glaze and coconuts

Oh, no you're right! I was just saying that the powdered molten lava cake reminded me of what the dessert you were talking about looked like. But it does look and sound delish! :P

German chocolate cake is normal chocolate cake with coconut that is often topped with coconut shreds. They'll also put the same icing with coconut between the layers too. It's sooo good
