Chapter 1

Jessi

“…and Goldilocks and the Three Bears lived happily ever after,” I read aloud as I snuggled with my two-year-old twins. “The end!” I closed the book and told Layla and Dylan it was time to go to sleep.

“No, again!” Dylan protested. Layla agreed.

“You two need to go night-night,” I said after I looked at my watch. It was about time for them to hit the sheets and for me to leave for my girls’ night out to celebrate my 21st birthday. “Mommy’s going out, and she wants you to be well-rested when she sees you again. Under the covers we go!”

Layla complied, but Dylan wasn’t having it. “I don’t wanna!” he complained, stomping his foot.

“You’re tired, bud,” I countered. “I can see it in those eyes. Climb into your bed so I can tuck you and sissy in, okay?”

Dylan opened his mouth to argue further, but all that came out was a loud yawn. I laughed despite myself. “See?” I said, ruffling his long blonde hair. “Told you! Get in the sheets and close your eyes so you can visit Dreamland.” I looked to the left to see Layla still sitting up in bed. “You, too, Layla.”

Just as I turned the bedside lamp off, the shining of a pair of headlights came through the window, illuminating the room like a night light.

“Jess, they’re here!” my sister, Megan, called out from downstairs. She was referring to my friends, Lauren and Olivia, who were accompanying me to the club.

“Be right there!” I returned. “Goodnight, sweeties. I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Goodnight,” Layla mumbled, then Dylan.

Softly closing the door behind me, I crept downstairs and said goodbye to Megan before I grabbed my purse and headed out.

“Hey, birthday girl!” Lauren greeted me as I climbed into her car. Since she’s currently pregnant and can’t drink anyway, we appointed her as the designated driver. “Are you ready for that first sip of tequila?”

I laughed. “How do you know I’ll like tequila?” I asked.

Olivia laughed as well. “Jessi, don’t lie!” she playfully scolded me. “You know you’ve always envied me whenever I ordered a tequila drink.”

“I envy you when you order just about any alcoholic drink,” I pointed out. “It doesn’t mean I actually like tequila. Lauren, how’s the pregnancy coming along?”

“It’s going great! I’m having a gender reveal party this weekend, and you’re both invited.”

“Sweet!” Olivia commented.

“You know, I think you’re having a boy,” I guessed. “You’re carrying pretty low, and aren’t potato chips your biggest craving?”

Lauren laughed. “Well, Ben thinks it’s a girl, and he really wants a girl… so, we’ll see.”

“And just a few weeks ago, were you not complaining of nausea and puking every morning?” Olivia asked. “That’s baby boy behavior right there!”

“Well, you only have girls,” Lauren reminded her.

“That’s true.”

I changed the subject. “Where are we going?” I asked Lauren.

“It’s a beachside club called The Wave, up in Dana Point,” she said. “They have karaoke every Monday night, and since I know you like to sing—”

I cut her off. “That doesn’t mean I’m any good at it,” I argued.

“Sure, you are! Do you remember our last girls’ trip? You sang in the hotel shower every night!”

This past summer, Lauren, Olivia, and I went on a trip to Rome, and we all shared a hotel room so we wouldn’t have to pay extra for separate rooms. It was a fun trip for all of us; we did a lot of shopping, sightseeing, and, of course, going to the beach.

“I sound like a dying cat.”

“You do NOT!” Olivia countered. “Just because Corey called you a bad singer, doesn’t mean you are!”

Corey is my ex-boyfriend. He wasn’t really that good of a boyfriend to begin with, but things really started to go south after the twins were born – he started having these urges to hurt me and the babies. We tried therapy for him, as well as couples therapy, but neither of them worked in our favor. I ultimately took the babies and moved away.
“Yeah, you need a man who loves you no matter what your singing ability is,” Lauren agreed.

“Yeah, I guess,” I said. “It’s just that I don’t want to get with just anyone. He has to be good with kids, he has to promise not to hurt us, and…” I sighed. “Maybe my standards are too high.”

“Oh, no, those are very valid criteria for a good man,” Olivia argued. “It really wouldn’t take much for a guy to be an upgrade from Corey, though. He was disrespectful to you, to Layla and Dylan, and didn’t you say he had a thing against your family?”

“He thought we were all hicks,” I recalled with a nod. “But we’re not… we just have Southern roots, is all.”

“Exactly!” Lauren and Olivia chorused.

“We just want the best for you, girl,” Lauren added. “That’s what friends are for, right?”

“Right,” I said.

Ten minutes later, we arrived at The Wave, which was moderately packed but not too busy. The bouncer nodded towards us when we approached and gestured for our IDs. When he looked at mine, he smiled and wished me a happy birthday.

“Thank you,” I said with an appreciative smile.

“Wait a minute,” he said when he saw Lauren and her pregnant belly. “Are you drinking tonight, ma’am?”

“No, sir,” she said. “I’m the designated driver.”

“That’s good. You really shouldn’t be going in pregnant, though.”

Olivia rolled her eyes and handed him a twenty to cover the entrance fee. “Here, buy yourself something nice with this,” she said.

When the bouncer finally let us in, there was a lot of drunken chatter going on, and the bartenders were working like busy bees. On the stage to our left, some drunk guys were singing an awful rendition of “She Bangs” that would’ve sent William Hung running for the hills. They were out of sync and quite obviously making up the lyrics, and they weren’t even really singing – it was more like drunken shouting.

“See?” Lauren said to me, nudging me forward. “Now, those are bad singers! I’ll bet you ten bucks that you can out-sing them. Just pick a song and turn your name in!”
