In 1971, Theo Albrecht, the co founder of Aldi, was kidnapped. The kidnappers requested a 7 million Deutche mark ransom ($2 million USD modern day) and were given it. They were caught in the end, but only half the money was recovered. Theo ended up trying to claim the random money as a tax deductible business expense, but it didn’t work.

down under I heard about a case of a drug deal gone wrong and the drug dealer or seller lost their drugs and claimed that as a business expense - apparently at that time the laws didn't account for illegal dealings so it went all the way to Australia's highest court which said since it wasn't against the tax laws at that time it was allowed to be tax deductible

you bet your ass though that the gov changed the laws straight away lol

I’m surprised they didn’t say it can’t count because it’s not a legitimate business or whatever Doesn't that kind of out the guy though? Maybe he can have it written off as a business expense, but couldn’t they charge him with some crime meanwhile? Like idk, selling illegal drugs sounds like it’s possibly a crime. Maybe
