At least 57 people were killed after a collision between two trains caused a derailment near the Greek city of Larissa on Feb. 28.

The passenger train, carrying more than 350 people, had been traveling from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki.

A stationmaster was charged with negligent homicide and jailed pending trial, while the prime minister apologized for any responsibility Greece's government may bear for the tragedy. Here are the world's worst train disasters:

Engineering creates amazing things, but with humans being behind them, it also means that somewhere, at some point, things will go wrong, and in some cases a crazy amount of people will be hurt as a result. That’s sad to hear, even worse if stationmaster could have stopped it from happening. It’s just a terrible thing

Yeah, it's not necessarily that there's fault with the engineering design, you can't really blame engineers for not foreseeing that, not when it sounds like others make decisions based on how much money they'll save rather than if it's going to harm others. Sometimes the harm comes from sources not connected to the design and engineers but more so decisions by unqualified people.

Yeah, it's not necessarily that there's fault with the engineering design, you can't really blame engineers for not foreseeing that, not when it sounds like others make decisions based on how much money they'll save rather than if it's going to harm others. I don't remember a whole ton of 2008 ngl, with some exceptions. I was still relatively young, definitely not at the age where I was following financial stuff closely. I do like that saying though.
