@eclipsoul former ceo of bpm, which was why baek and co caught a lot of flack on their exit from sm, most notable for evading military service by pulling out his teeth or something along those lines — generally disliked and sketchy dude

I had a feeling him halting activities so suddenly was weird… I don’t understand why relationships are the reason some idols depart for their groups. Let idols have lives!
Unfortunately idols are still marketed as boyfriends/girlfriends for their fans. Dating or even relationships would destroy the fantasy that idols live exclusively for their fandoms. A successful K-Pop idol career is like living in a golden cage. I guess it's the same in J-Pop but I'm not sure.

interesting wording
From what I gather he met with her and may or may not have paid for certain services - I guess that could be classified as a "relationship" in certain circumstances

I don't know anything about this scandal.

Regarding sex work, it should be legal and regulated like any other job. It being illegal is what leads to most of the danger and exploitation in the industry.

I've got no issues with sex work or prostitution per se PROVIDED that it's consensual safe and well regulated
however different countries have different laws with regards to such and I think SK is one that does hence why the scandal

We are in agreement.

Though I will say this: Law does not determine what is right and how something should be.

What is legal or illegal is not equal to right/wrong, good/bad etc.

Just because South Korea has these laws does not mean we should base our personal judgements off of it.

good lol

true

also true

also true but even if we disagree with what the law is one still needs to abide by it when we are in those countries or even our own country...and even if we happen to break a "unjust" law one still broke the law and deserves punishment - obviously the punishment might be less depending on various factors

I strongly disagree with this. I know this is a common position, but I personal reasons for strongly being opposed to this.

I'll give a personal example, my great uncle was arrested and tortured by the Gestapo and sent to a concentration camp where he lived for a few years and was executed in 1944 as the allies were advancing.

His crime Terrorism against the German people and Government as he was in a resistance group in a country annexed by Germany in a military invasion.

I'm certainly not going to begin to comment on your personal situation or that of your family.

I'm speaking more generally - what is one going to do about "unjust" laws in other (or even within the same country) if not abide by them

I'm ethnically Chinese and I know there's certainly laws in China that I might disagree with but if I return to China I'm certainly not going to start criticizing CCP openly in the streets

I don't think this was a prostitution thing just for the fact she's retired. Not that that would've changed my stance on this matter, what a stupid reason to cut someone out of a group

obviously I'm not privy to exactly what went on but as more facts come out we'll see a clearer picture whether he paid for certain services or mere enjoyed the company of the former av actress - if you ask me personally yes both seem to be stupid reasons but I'm not an idol and I don't have idolistic parasocial relationships to maintain lol

good great - but that's not me...I'm a realistic not idealistic - if you and others wish to protest and try to effect change I'm all for it (from the sidelines) but I have to live within the system and society and the laws and I don't have enough power to effect change

Depends on what you're criticizing, being afraid of prison or death is natural. That being said we end up in the situations we have because we are afraid of prison, death etc.

China is better than western countries in plenty of ways and worse in others. Most people in my country see China as evil, mainly just because they oppose the geopolitical goals of our ruling class who uses China as a scapegoat whenever something is going wrong in my country usually due to the idiocy of our own leaders and nothing to do with the Chinese.

Anyways we are way off topic. I'll try not to derail the thread anymore.

All I'll say is that being realistic means fighting and knowing what's better for the world. Optimism is realism, the system just doesn't want us to see that

Idealistic and realistic perspectives represent contrasting approaches to viewing the world. Idealism focuses on how things could be, often emphasizing values, dreams, and potential for improvement, while realism focuses on how things actually are, acknowledging limitations and practical considerations
