Have you ever discovered something major about yourself through a kpop forum? (1 Viewer)

Okay so some of you, probably a lot even, know I’m faceblind. But up until I was 18, I wasn’t aware that face blindedness existed, or that it was unusual to not be able to recognize faces. I was aware that some people could, but I believed that the majority of people couldn’t, that it was a special talent for a select few. I had no idea until another user with prosopagnosia on a different kpop forum said something like “and you’re probably the type of person who can recognize faces” and I replied with “nah I’m not that talented”. They taught me about face blindedness and encouraged me to look into it more. A year later, I was getting a neuropsych evaluation (for something unrelated) and I brought up, so they tested me and lo and behold, I did have it (at that point I was already 99% sure, given my known inability to recognize faces and me failing almost every online test, even some more reputable ones, though some were so badly designed that even I passed). Who knows how much longer it would have taken for me to realize that I was unusual without that users help

To be honest I wouldn’t have even started talking about my own mental health if it wasn’t fir kpop forums. It was something I was always told to shove down deep. I also begun learning about how I deal with conflicts.

For me it was always this way, but some people develop it after a head trauma. And for me the opposite feels unreal, like a magic power or something. I can recognize people by hair or build or voice ofc but by face seems so weird

Well I am see them, I just don’t tell what makes them different from each other. Like you might as well copy and paste the same one on each persons face and I’d be none the wiser because that’s what it looks like already

Oh, okay, I thought you see something blurry instead of the actual faces cuz I saw that in a drama. All dramas lie. But seeing the same face on each person is really different.

An old friend of mine thought it too and said she heard about it in a drama also, I wonder if it was the same one
It is a spectrum though, it’s possible that for some people it might be to that level, mines not the worst it can be tbh, though it’s still obviously quite a bit worse than the average person. Like for an example, my therapist apparently shopped at the store I worked at and went through my checkout line and I had no idea despite seeing her once a week until she brought it up at the next session, I’m assuming the average person could do that. But if I look in a mirror I do recognize myself (though my hair color is a giveaway most of the time) but some people can’t. So yeah it varies for sure. On the other side of the spectrum there’s people who 10 years later can recognize the person that sat on the other side of the classroom in 1 class, so it varies in the recognizing range as well.

For me, it was learning that no matter how kind I try to be, not everyone will want my kindness or to be friends with me, and that a lack of communication on either end or on both ends can destroy relationships. Had to learn both the hard way. Fun times.

For me this was like giving up happiness it's self. I was forced for the first time to choose myself and my happiness over the opinions of others. It's helped me feel like it was simply OK to be me for the first time in my life.
