The vault serves as a backup for the world's seed collections held in traditional genebanks around the globe, offering long-term protection for crop diversity. The vault is built within a former coal mine, with the main part over 100 meters inside the mountain. It can store 4.5 million seed samples, each containing an average of 500 seeds.​

Hmmm I watched Final Impossible Mission (Tom Cruise) where it's (blah blah blah genetic backup of Earth life blah blah blah blah) in Africa. But I also knew peripherally sthg abt genetic back up stored somewhere on Earth in case humans blew ourselves up thru nuclear war (probably read it online, but dint retain where n how many backups-since it's too doomsday-ish depressing to think too much about)
