If so, this is what it means. Coins on a headstone show that someone has visited and paid their respects. They can also bring comfort to loved ones, as it shows others are remembering the person. This is especially common at the graves of servicemen and women. Bringing a coin to a fellow soldier’s grave becomes a way to honour their service and shared experiences. The practice of placing coins on graves dates back to ancient Greece, where people were buried with money to pay Charon for passage into the Underworld. Coins were often placed over the deceased's eyes or in their mouth. This tradition spread to many European cultures and continued even after belief in Greek and Roman myths faded. Today, instead of placing coins inside the coffin, the practice has mostly evolved to coins being placed on headstones or graves.​
