And it’s not even just because of formality or pretentiousness or that stuff :sakUwu: The reason is that it comes from grammatical cases. English used to have a lot more cases than it currently does, but a lot of those have died off or become rarely used, or used for very few words. Some remain, that’s how we get words like he vs him vs his, or who vs whom vs whose. Many do not, you wouldn’t call a horse something different between the nominative cases (subject) vs objective case (object). The pretty rigid English word order ensures that we understand the sentence regardless. Whom is a remnant of the old case system (and will probably die off soon, let’s be real), which also leads the the association with formality, it’s an old thing that common speech has basically moved on from, but formal language is always behind :sanapray:

if anything i wondered why there's only three of them because my first language has all of these :we_kpopsourcing: (yes, every word with a question mark is a way to say "who")

Hungarians got like 20 I think :icgyu: But ngl Russian has 5-6 and I usually knew when to use the right one but still don’t actually know why whom exists in English because I just went with feel :haylul:
