Have you ever wondered how differences in shoe size were picked? (1 Viewer)

If you're in the US, UK, and Canada, wonder no more. If you aren’t then keep wondering because idk about yours specifically :lisalaugh:

Shoe sizes in England used to be pretty random. All measurements were. King Edward the 1st decided this need to be rectified, and he decreed that one inch would now be defined as 3 barleycorns, making barleycorn an official measurement. A barleycorn was the length of a grain of barley from the middle of the husk. This measurement was then taken and used in shoe size standardization. To this day, shoe sizes in the US, Canada, and the UK differ by 1/3 of an inch, or one barleycorn. Except these days we have more exact ways to find 1/3 of an inch than pick a random grain of barley. Progress.

More importantly, why are men's and women's shoe size scales different? My feet are big enough to wear either, so I do cross-shop. When I look at European sizes, there's only one number, so it's easy to find the right shoes; the same with UK sizing. In US sizes, I have to go to four or five different size sections and still have to try them on.

My guess is they probably just want the average shoe size to be similar. Like they want the average man to wear size 7 let’s say and the average woman to also wear size 7. It’s definitely not something thats needed though yeah
