This is a part 2 from 'Have you ever wanted to know how baptists got their name?' This time, methodist version!

First, the basics:

The Methodist (or Wesleyan) church was founded by John Wesley (1703-1791), an Anglican minister from Oxford

• He went out to preach and pray to the poor, including people in jail, paupers, the sick, and prostitutes
• He was influenced by Jonathon Edwards (a prominent preacher during the First Great Awakening)
• The religion began as a reform of the Anglican Church in 1739
• John Wesley emphasized fervent piety in imitation of monks
• Focuses more on works than beliefs
• Combines scripture, tradition, reason, and experience

The practices include:

• Prayer, Bible reading, meditation, and giving to the poor

The Method in Methodists is the order of their practices. Each church service begins with prayer, then Bible reading, then meditation, then giving to the poor - and that's the method!
