Mayday was adopted as the distress call to be used over radio and telephone. It has nothing to do with May, and nothing to do with day either. It was picked as the distress call rather than things like SOS (the s sound wasn’t easy to hear in many cases) because of its phonetic similarity to the French m'aidez (which meant help me). At this point in time, concerns were high about passenger planes flying over the English Channel and needing to be rescued. Unlike SOS, it also faced less risk of being lost or misunderstood.

Mayday is also explored quite a bit in Starset's Transmissions album, which is a lot about space and the moon and planets -- with astronauts trying to communicate to each other and what they experience in space.
