The English word “alarm” comes from French, and before that Italian (all’arme), which meant “to arms” (it was a contraction of “alle arme”). After making its way to Middle English, it still retained that meaning, though it adopted more of a general warning over time. This makes a lot of sense if you hear alarm and think of phrases like “sound the alarm”, but a bit less sense if you hear alarm and think “alarm clock”, as hopefully you aren’t bringing weapons with you wherever you go that day (with some rare exceptions).
