I wonder if I should read the novel or watch the show first?

There are loads of 'scenes' that are censored in the drama. For me, I would read the novel first.

The Drama is more like a bromance, though they weaved some things in there for MDZS fans. I would read the novel first if I were you. I personally watched the Drama First and then got into the rest of the series and it wasn't a terrible transition into the rest of it.
