It’s so hard to figure out, I’ve seen different sources say different things, but it seems like it came from China and became super popular in Russia before it hit the western market. As a Russian I had no idea about that and found that really interesting

Yep, in Russia it was called tea fungus

Same, I was wholly uninterested in it and still wouldn’t buy it. The history of it is interesting though, and my parents surprisingly had never heard of it despite having it when they were growing up
