How many songs do you give an artist to hook you before you no longer check out their new releases? (2 Viewers)

I was thinking about this today after seeing an announcement for a new song from a soloist I've been, at best, indifferent to all of their work. I thought about clicking on the video, but figured... I didn't like anything else they released, why would I suspect this would be any different?

So I think my willingness must be around three releases. Give or take. I sometimes listen to new releases that get really hyped in the Kpop community or from groups that my friends like most. And some group concepts are just so personally not aligned with my tastes that I don't give them a chance beyond the first one.

I don't really go by songs. well, I do, but that's not my first prio - my main criterion is what it says about them in their bio. if I like what I read, THEN I check out the songs. I just like to know what kind of music they play first before I dive in.

But ig if I had to pick a number of songs to give an artist, I'd say two or three. it only took me two songs to get hooked on 5SOS, for example.

If I get it recommended to me I might check it out, if I happen to be in the mood for new songs and see someone has a new song I might check it out, if I hear a clip and like it I might check it out. It just feels like a lot of work sometimes!! Even though rationally, it's like "I could let this song play in the background while I'm doom scrolling..." I just don't. I should also do less doom scrolling.

I don't usually have a rule or anything for this
But it's pretty strict
New arrivals get one chance, and if I don't like it I don't seek them out again
But if they make their way back to me somehow and I do like it, then that's how I find out about them and come back for their music

Hence, I usually don't discover new artists often.

Honestly, I think that's fair. Like their debut should provide a clear sense of "this is the direction this group will go in" and if it's immediately off-putting, like why would I go listen to them again? Clearly, my tastes are not aligned with what they have to offer.

Honestly, when it comes to K-Pop the songs being good isn't as important as me liking the idol so the answer depends on who it is. I'm a fan of a group or two where I initially didn't like the music at all but I've learned to enjoy it through appreciation of the artist. Of course the music being good helps and I'm not talking about any of my ults here, but answering the question "how many songs do I give them?" it's anywhere from 1 to infinity.

for kpop i'd say it's like 3-4 given that kpop groups release things more often and can quickly change their sound.

for non-kpop i'll say two albums, for example after taylor swift released midnights and ttpd which i both found terribly boring i knew i wasn't going to enjoy the life of a showgirl despite knowing she was going to sample my favourite artist ever on one of the tracks.

That's a really good point that the stakes for checking out a Kpop artist generally feel lower, because they're likely not going to go more than a year without dropping another song, so eh, why not give the third release this year a quick try to hook you?

Whereas western artists promote the same album for years on end, so it requires a certain amount of investment to follow through an album cycle until the next release. And like, why would you do that if you already don't like what they're releasing?

I always endeavour to check out new artists if they are recommended or I just find them since I know my own preferences and that most of the songs I listen to I won't necessarily like so it's more like finding a diamond in the rough
