HyunA Is Under Fire For What Many Claim To Be Cultural Appropriation
Fans are torn with their opinions.

HyunA is receiving heated criticism for her actions.

She posted a photo and video of herself wearing colored and what many think are, box braids, and is now being called out by both fans and non-fans for getting her hair done like that, and posting it on her Instagram!



In the video, she is seen playing with her hair and tying it into a ponytail. Fans also spotted DAWN in the video HyunA posted, sitting at the back getting his hair done!

Many fans have expressed their disappointment in HyunA for getting braids that have cultural value, for her lack of respect, and for posting photos and a video of her flaunting her newly done braids.





However, some of her fans are also quick to defend her, and are calling out those who quickly bashed HyunA without looking closely. Some fans are claiming that she is not wearing box braids, but instead is wearing Thai Khao San braids.



Around an hour later, HyunA posted a short video of her giving fans a special message about how she loves and respects all her fans. She also deleted a lot of the other photos she posted with her braids. Although there is no direct mention that she did this after the backlash she received, fans are assuming that she saw all the negative comments against her and her actions and address it through deleting the other photos and as well as through the video.

Thai Khao San braids is a part of the Thai culture and has nothing to do with being black.

OMG - fucking agian - THE ONLY TING THAT REMOTELY COMES CLOSE TO CULTURAL APPROPRIATION IS SAYING SOMETHING BELONGS TO ONE GROUP OF PEOPLE ONLY AND DENYING ALL OF HISTORY! Especially history and tradition that predates a certian religion founded around 1920.

I don't think people understand the meaning between 'cultural appropriation' and 'cultural appreciation' anymore.
Plus, HyunA's hairstyle is a Thai hairstyle, yet you don't see Thai people go crazy about it, do you? They would think this as cultural appreciation since she's appreciating a part of Thai culture.

I've been saying this since the beginning and I'll sustain it, this Cultural appropriation thing was invented by people on Twitter who don't know the meaning of the word "Culture" and even less about history and how our entire civilization was built on the "appropriation" they want to demonize so hard.
One thing is showing (and ask) respect for others beliefs and ways of living but this getting out of hand and has become a whole mockery...

Braids are so common in every culture. Little girls braid each others hair as quickly they figure out how to do it. When i was little putting lot of braids to hair at evening was common trick to have wavy hair at morning.

I went on holiday to Salou (Catalonia in Spain) many years ago and there's the whole business of African women doing braids to children and I had them done. I doubt they ever thought about it being a cultural appropriation because they earn money off it and if they had a problem with it, to begin with, they wouldn't do it.

It's such a harmless thing and yet some people make it into a bigger issue than it should be. I absolutely dislike when people speak on behalf of others and make it into only right opinion out there, it also makes me sad how many liberal white people bend over to the minorities just not to offend someone when it shouldn't even be considered offensive in the first place, just because they feel guilt of being white and that's fucked up.

Fun fact a lot of African hairstyles we see from tribes are shaved heads. Not saying they don't play in to African tribe history because they do. Most commonly the dread locks that American Blacks hold on to come from the Rastafari which was seen as a "symbol of rebellion".

Seriously if you get over this whole cultural appropriation the history of braids and dread locks alike is very amazing and a trip of a journey to take. Seriously if we just stopped all this fighting we could rebreathe life into history and help some traditions going.

Very true and it's tweets like this that will hurt certain cultures since they are claiming something is theirs when it's not and they are taking away the credibility of not only Thai culture but also the black communities.
It's the similar stance to the Orbit situation you were discussing.
