I don’t understand airline prices (1 Viewer)

So I’m looking for flights from my Canadian city to the US in August. Please tell me why a direct flight on a Saturday is cheaper than a flight in a Monday with a layover in another Canadian city. ​

even with reading the departure times, it trips me out.

I think it has to do with the amount of people they expect at each location, and what other connections are already planned. I'm sure there's a big algorithm for it.

I also learned recently of a method called skiplagging, though you can get in trouble if you do it too often (airlines just don't like it). It's basically where you book a flight from your origin city to another city (doesn't matter where) that has a connection in your actual destination city. And then you just don't take the second flight. It apparently can end up cheaper sometimes.

the vast majority of flight money comes from "business" class. They fly on mondays-fri. Saturday flights are hard to fill. Thus, it's direct and cheaper.
