I don't understand "animal activists" who only care about the cute ones (1 Viewer)

Firstly, that is not a real animal activist if they do that.

I'm gonna use the dugong as an example. They are ugly, no lie. But they deserve as much attention as other pretty animals that are also vulnerable. Most have probably never heard of the dugong... here is a short explanation of them:

Dugongs are cousins of manatees and share a similar plump appearance, but have a dolphin fluke-like tail. And unlike manatees, which use freshwater areas, the dugong is strictly a marine mammal. Commonly known as "sea cows," dugongs graze peacefully on sea grasses in shallow coastal waters of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans.

Oh I meant it more as a general statement. I wasn't talking from a scietific standpoint. I have seen online people rallying to help the cute turtles or dolphins, but ugly animals get less attention by the general public. Some people will call themselves animal activisits but it is often bandwagon hopping for cute animals. I just used the dugong as a random example of an ugly animal.

Oohhh okay. I think Dugong's are cute tho. As an animal lover in general, I find that most animals are adorable. They have their own quirks that make them unique. As humans, we seriously underestimate their capabilities. It upsets me to see them butchered(exception of livestock, they were created and made for human consumption. I do believe in humane treatment. They should be given a nice life.) and left to die thanks to humans destroying their habitats.

Real animal activists fight for every animal for sure, these are the people that should have a voice and speak up about the injustices. I'm happy many more are bringing to light these issues. Just when fake people (commonly found on social media) do it for the wrong reasons it makes the message not seem as authentic.

I recently saw a study where they gave people a variety of groups of living things and objects and told them to rank them in order of who they’d save from a fire. The different animals and plants had different numbers of populations outside the fire zone, meaning some may recover because there’s many other populations and some may not. They ranked humans first (including the person who was warned of the fire and refused to evacuate). I think the highest ranking non human was koalas, which had the most populations (I think 50) outside the population. Next was wallaby’s, which had 1 population outside. Snails were next, but much less voted on, despite these snails being the last of their kind. Shrubs got even less attention. So from this study it does imply that human bias and cute bias is a thing, with koalas getting the most importance.

Disclaimer: some numbers may be a bit off and it’s just one study. But the main ideas are the same and it is relevant here.

I haven't really seen that tbh. I just assume that animal rights activists care for every animal, but dugongs and other animals are not that known and might not really be on the agenda as much as geese for example
