I don’t get how singers learn songs in other languages so well. Like my sister learned a song in Estonian for choir and I’m like huh? How on earth do you remember lyrics in Estonian? Estonian is nothing like any language she knows Though she actually said it was easier than Latvian, which is linguistically more familiar. But I feel like I would need years to learn one in a language I don’t speak.

Also her Russian pronunciation is better than both of my bothers Both of whom spoke Russian before english

are we learning the whole language for it? I thought you just learn to pronounce the line correctly and repeat

You don’t need to know the whole language but it’s harder ofc to sing in an unfamiliar language because you don’t have a storyline to follow like you would in a language you know, which makes memorization a lot harder. Also pronunciation isn’t easy, you have to learn how to make all the unfamiliar sounds that you haven’t encountered before. I’ve met people who have studied languages in college and have extremely noticeable difficulties with pronunciation, you can immediately tell they didn’t grow up speaking the language. For them yes they do have to study stuff other than pronunciation too that singers don’t, like vocab and grammar, but they to also formally learn how to pronounce words in that language. And while it’s not as black and white as saying closer languages linguistically have more similar pronunciation, it does oftentimes happen that languages pretty close by family share more sounds that are similar to each other. Her Russian pronunciation for example is significantly better than anyone I’ve met who studied Russian but not from childhood, and better than my brothers who don’t speak Russian much but learned it before any other language
