Because of your guys terrible influence I keep thinking about a cat. I took extra dog beds to the shelter 2 weeks ago and saw a tortoise shell cat and I check the website every day hoping someone adopted her.

You need 2 X chromosomes to be tortoiseshell. The only male tortoiseshells have 2 X chromosomes and 1 Y, which is ofc much rarer than females with 2 X chromosomes

Any chance the shelter has fostering? You know, in case you want to give it a try

Not fair appealing to my needy side. They do have fostering and a 2 week return window. Not that I asked! I don't have room for a cat... or litter box. And my dog might eat her.

First two can be worked on. Last one… That said, my dog would have loved to eat my cat at first. Now she sometimes shoves her muzzle into his face so he’ll groom her, and she loves being chased by him. But we had the benefit of having quite a bit of room and an area where she doesn’t go (downstairs) that allowed for a gradual and safer introduction. If you don’t have that it doesn’t help the case unfortunately

It seems that the traits for the colors are linked to the sex chromosomes. The X chromosome either has the gene for orange, or the gene for not orange (usually black, but can be other colors), but one single X chromosome not be both. For a female cat, she could have one for orange and one for not orange because she has 2 Xs, but if it’s a male with only one X chromosome, they can’t have both colors because they only have one X chromosome. You can still get male cats that are orange and white if they have a separate non sex linked gene for it, or orange and another color due to a mutation, but the tortoiseshell pattern doesn’t appear as a result of any of these. Only 2 sex linked contrary orange/not orange combos.
