Rub your uncovered areas (arms, legs, neck) or/and the picnic blanket with a few drops of lemongrass oil. Bugs, flies, mosquitoes, ticks don't like the smell. Works also when you go hiking. You can use the oil with an aroma lamp when sitting on the balcony.

Ants? I'm not sure. You could pay attention to their trails before sitting in the grass. They'll come to visit you often if you sit next to an ant trail.
