''In alliance with Power. The wives of dictators'' by Antje Windgassen

I haven't found an english translation, but it's a very interesting book. The premise already established why this book was written. Too many times have happened that women in powerful positions, or near powerful men get overshadowed and seen only as a footnote for historians, so now it's time to reveal what their life journey was before, and after they met their husbands, who in these cases happened to be dictators. The book also asks the question why would these women choose such people who were seen as cruel in other people's eyes.

I will talk about the women a little bit, from what i learned in the book, but without names ofc. There are many categories of ladies in this book, many that aspired for a political role or had higher aspirations in life, while others remained faithfully next to their husbands and children from start til end. These latter usually knew their spouses before the fame and glory, they got bewitched by their fight for equality and general well being of everyone, before it became general well being of SOME people. They mostly never shone in the spotlight, rarely even next to their husbands, were frequently cheated on by their spouse, but still faithfully and dutifully remained mothers and companions throughout their lives.

In case of other more ambitious women, we can see that they knowingly approached a man who had a nation under their hands. Some were educated, even professors, and some only finished 4 classes during that time. What is really interesting is that in some cases their husbands didnt act without consulting them, effectively they created oine team ruling over all of them. A thing that is often ommitted from history books, how they influenced eachother and encouraged eachother's road to leadership.

In other instances, the famous wives, who overshadowed their husbands were exhiled from the public, or their political ambitions stopped altogether for good by their spouse. Other more brutal depictions of these womens included the fate of one of them, who dared criticize their other half, paying with their life for it.

However it may be, one thing is sure! These women we're not only drawn by the glitz and glamour a rich and powerful husband offered, but also by their own ambititons and need to survive in some cases. Some winning the love of a nation, some trying to win the votes of a nation and some following their love til death.

All in all, solid read. I liked it, 5 stars! Idk how much is true of these, of course it was documented from historians and witnesses of that time, but as we all know history can be altered too!
Looking forward to the next book!​
