And one of the entries was pombe, an alcohol made from banana from the Horn of Africa. But when I read it, I just felt like you could replace two words, and suddenly it goes from being weird alcohol who deserves a spot on a weird foods list to being traditional French wine.
In this blurb, just replace bananas with grapes and take out the mention of Africa and there’s no longer much supposedly “weird” about it. These days mechanical presses are used for wine, and storage may be different, but the old walk over grapes method is still used, and some traditionalists prefer it. I just thought it was weird that pombe got a spot on a really weird foods list, but wine is and has always been mainstream in the west and was made very similarly in all relevant ways.
