I didn't think that it was terrible, the budget was just too low for my liking but there wasn't anything that would need to make it bigger. It's simple. You have a few settings: the Herron Home, the George Home, Janice's home, School, and gym for the Spring Fling. What else do you need? The acting was okay and I did not really like this version of Cady as much as I did in Mean Girls 2004. Angourie has a really sweet singing voice though!
Renee Rapp as Regina was the only one I was impressed with and her songs are so good. The first time we see her (her entrance) she sings that song that begins with "My name is Regina George" which feels so powerful. And Auil'i Cravahlo as Janice was so convincing that I almost forgot she played a Disney Princess just a few years back lmao
If this movie flops (which it's doing well right now considering they made way past the break-even point on their budget [36 million] meaning they turned some sort of profit), it would mostly be because of the flawed advertising. It is NOT a remake of the original 2004 film, it's a movie adaptation of Mean Girls: The Musical. So if you don't like musicals, you won't like this movie. (can't stress this enough because there are people who hated it because they didn't know it was a musical)
Of course, nothing can replace the original, whether we're talking about the OG film or musical.
I would give it a 7/10 for the soundtrack, delivery, quality casting, and tribute to the originals but it has its flaws like only decent acting and low budget. But I would want for it to become viral because I loved the way they executed certain things. And Renee Rapp had played Regina before in a musical so casting her in the movie felt like the right choice. She also just gives off that vibe :P
