as i type this, it appears that this country just elected a guy who:​

• took drugs on live TV during the presidential debate​
• was a football hooligan who had physical fights with people in a forest​
• used to be a pimp​
• stole an elderly man's flat​

as the f*cking president i know this isn't a political forum, but i absolutely cannot take it anymore. the country is too f*cked for any sane person to live there and yet i'm too poor to move out of this god forsaken place. KS users who lived through similar situations or even those who are lucky enough to not have gone through that, please keep the polish people who still have a moral backbone in your thoughts because we sure are going to need this...​

I do not get the logic at all, and even when some of those voters are confronted directly, they seem incapable of explaining their decisions, which should, IDK, maybe be a wakeup call that better decisions need to be made?

I think people understand that the neoliberal consensus is not delivering. Many countries have experienced a multi-decade stagnation in real wage growth while jobs at the lower end of the income distribution have been hollowed-out by globalisation.
Unfortunately the only ones with media attention who are expressing discontent with the current situation and proposing a solution to it are right wing cranks. They can just point to foreigners or whatever.
It isn't that most people are fooled. More are people just staying home and not voting, because all the "normal" parties just promise status quo - a continued "sensible" management of the decline.

Notice how Australia is doing quite well, and they have mandatory voting...

History repeats itself.

There are several crises going on around the world, the poor get poorer, several conflicts happening (and for Europeans, they've been saying for over a year now that our time of peace is most likely over).
People are scared. When they are scared, they tend to vote on the extremes.

People in Flanders always vote on the extreme right parties here because they're stupid and think foreigners are the cause of their problems.
One party always wins but there's one who's more extreme who is gaining more votes every election.
There's a law against them that they can't rule because they once were deemed as racists in court, but now it's under pressure.

Luckily the walloons vote very left so we often take months, even years to form a government.
Gotta love our complex politics.

Yep, parts of Europe go nuts at the moment. It's a storm that will be over as soon as people realize that going extreme won't help. It's annoying how things repeat in history because there's no learning from the past.
