There’s no official language in the US. But to become a US citizen through naturalization you’re required to pass an English language test. :susPepe: Seems pretty official

Basically :haylul: You even get snowflakes on Twitter crying about how they stood in the US citizens line at the airport but heard people speaking other languages. Not even making that up, it happened. How offensive to hear a non English language spoken right?

Maybe its because they don't want to translate the test into all the other languages
No it’s not that, it’s a test specifically designed to test comprehension. I believe the other parts of the test are allowed to be conducted in other languages (not positive).

Okay I googled it and there’s two parts, the English language test and the civics test. The civics test can be done with an interpreter. So the English language test is 100% about can you speak language, it’s not relevant to the other parts of the test

Well you also have to consider that bilingual people exist. Like if it’s about the comment that someone made about being upset that others in the US citizens line spoke other languages I’d be an example of that. I’d be around family most likely and I speak in Russian to them, but I’m fluent in English and speak it better than Russian. Yet I’m still a US citizen, I’m just one that speaks another language also which apparently that person thinks is worth getting angry over. But there are parts of the US, especially the south, where people may not know English well or at all. I’ve encountered that and I live in New England. These groups happen everywhere, my ancestors in Russia spoke primarily German for a long time and lived in German communities, despite being born in Russia/the USSR. There may be countries where it appears less though.

Both sets of my grandparents could not speak or understand English at all and they managed to live life like regular people in the states and became American citizen. It was easier for my mom's side because they spoke Spanish and ig you can call it the other unofficial official language of the states XD. But yeah, my mom's side literally lived in Florida >.> the designated Cuban state.
And my dad's side lived in a predominately desi melting pot community.

:breadbonk:To all the nimwits that think you need to speak a certain language here to live life.

It’s pretty rare I feel that speaking a certain language well is required to live in any country. My grandparents live in Germany and neither are fully fluent, my grandfather is pretty decent because of his heritage but my grandmother struggles more. She gets by with her limited knowledge. And she doesn’t live in an area where Russian is widely spoken either. They also both considered moving to the US, when they really don’t speak any English. But the area they considered has a higher percentage of Russian speakers so they would be less on their own.

Props to our parents and grandparents. They did the best they could moving to foreign countries. The resources probably weren't as good as they are now with better ESL programs.

what? it's not English? interesting
Nope, federally there was no official language ever. Some states have official languages, English for all those that do have one and Spanish for an additional language in some states.

edit: I just found out Australia and the UK have no official languages either. I didn’t expect that from those two tbh.
