Colorism essentially is the social hierarchy that favors lighter skin over darker skin

Firstly, let's stop acting like Proud Family was ever good rep. Dijonay Jones is a young woman in the show played by ever so-talented Karen Malina. Dijonay's characteristics are she's the loud, rowdy, sassy token darskin of the friend group. She's characterized as being rude and being a burden to people around her especially Sticky and Penny WHO IS SUPPOSED TO BE HER FRIEND BTW. So generally she was portrayed in a negative light. Now let's quickly switch to Lacienaga Boullevardez played by Alisa Reyes. Most of you bigheads will try and brush off my point by saying Lacienaga isn't black. And while Lacienaga isn't black she still benefits from colorism. Lacienaga's character is scarily similar to Dijonay's with the exception of how they treat her. While Lacienaga is just as toxic as Dijonay, Lacienaga gets off with a slap on the wrist while we're always directed to hate Dijonay when she has her slight ups and downs with Penny. And Penny herself is a fucking asshole. I'm the same age now she is canonically in the original and even I'm not that cocky and overconfident. But ykw nobody gives a damn cuz she's a lightskin and gets to do what she wants with no consequences.

And if you thought I was done OH NO NO. We haven't even gotten to K-Pop and their colorist bs
The members of EXO constantly ridicule Kai for his tan skin and on one occasion coloring his face in with a black marker when making illustrations of the members. And Kai is just as guilty for how he handles these comments often getting offended or hurt when the members call him dark, as if having tan or dark skin is some fate worse than the guillotine. Then we have TWICE don't get me started on how much they ridicule Tzuyu for her skin. There was one livestream where they did this and below I'll give an English transcript
[CONTEXT they were talking about one of the members going out to the jungle]
Jihyo: When you go to the jungle, don't become too dark Jeongyeon
[Tzuyu budges in offended because she also has tan skin] Tzu: Why? I'm also dark
Jeong: Why is Tzuyu dark? [laughing]
Chaeng: She's always dark, I'm usually quite dark as well
Jeong: Sorry
Tzu: What's the matter? It's the color of healthy skin
Jeong: Right it's the color of healthy skin
I find this and many other incidents to be unacceptable. It's funny how Jihyo of all the girls thought this was funny considering she was also ridiculed a lot for having tan skin. TWICE even partnered with a skin-whitening brand called Scarlett Whitening in 2021.

Then there's the west. Black folk are honestly the worst with colorism because of the hypocrisy. Always on this high horse black is beautiful bullshit but our men don't even want to date us because we're too dark and too 'ghetto' for them. They all want us to constantly have silky straight sew-ins and skin whiter than paper. Well sorry, if you wanted a bitch like that walk into your nearest Marshall's or Target and you'll find just what you seek, that bitch won't be black though just warning you men. If you are too cowardly and racist to handle kinky hair and melanin, you are not a real man. Preference my ass. Then there are the "skin brightening' and "hyperpigmentation" products. Despite what you may think, NO and I mean NO dermatologists will recommend these because it's just fancy words to make it sound like they're good. No matter what this shit WILL give you skin cancer cuz it's the equivalent of injecting your face with pure mercury

I barely remember TPF, but I do remember Dijonay's siblings were named spices - instead of real names. And of course she's named after mustard (reminds me of that "Watermelondrea" video). Which looking back I'm not really feeling... it isn't hard to name a big family.

I can only speak about the west. I agree colorism is an issue in the black community. I've had to hear classmates refer to a darkskin kid as "burnt toast," or burnt anything really. One of my guy friends in HS arrogantly stated during an assembly that there was conflict between dark-skinned and light-skinned men because "they [dark-skinned] know we're [light-skinned] better looking." Back when I had relaxed hair, guys assumed I was mixed. And other forms of mistreatment I've encountered, like comparison...
Whatever started it all - the separation during slavery? The brown paper bag? It's really harmful, especially in childhood, and it's gotta stop.

I think one has to remember that with poc includes a diverse range of people who might not all have the same thoughts about colourisms

I'm chinese and like more koreans we are a fairly homogenized people and traditionally lighter is better because the people with lighter fairer skin would be the people who lived "indoors" and out of the sun since the labourers and poorer people would toil the fields and thus have darker skin

those thoughts continue to this day in those societies
