Information is money, information is power.
Did you know that many websites today collect users' data? Search engines certainly collect user data (what keywords you've searched, what websites you've accessed).
Social media influencers collect followers' data (essentially making a "list" of potential customers), and sell that information to information service companies. Those companies then sell that user information to other companies. This is how social media influencers make a living, apart from their advertisement of brand deals.
"Lists" of customer data are used in all industries; especially in the real estate industry. Expensive real estate is marketed toward people who have moneyーfinding out who has that money, these customers, is not an easy task. Such companies are prone to internal conflicts over the rights of this precious information (the "customer list" in this case).
Historically, there have been laws regarding the management of information; employees can get punished/fined for leaking sensitive information (information leakage) in my country. Such laws are going to be brought up much, much more from now on. Maybe they already are being brought up at the moment.
Information is a currency of money in this information age we live in. While people might be enjoying their services tailored to their online experiences, underneath all this is an emerging battle and struggle over online information, online turf, over online customers. "Information" has created new power relations unique to our generation.
