Interesting conversation with a Korean man last night (1 Viewer)

I was on YouTube watching one of those live music show channels and it was nothing but Koreans in the live chat.

I started talking English and a lot of people began speaking back to me in English. They were actually pretty fascinated with me and why I was even there lol.

But the topic of women came up and I told them I like Asian and Korean women. And one guy said "why? your women are way better looking. All the korean women are feminists and hate men. I'm actually tired of them."

Damn! I didn't know that lol.

Is it true a large portion if Korean women are men hating feminists?? Or is that just one guy's opinion?

I've heard/seen a number of Koreans (both men and women) stating that women in Korea have had enough of how society in SK treats women.

From the general perception that women should be below men in a hierarchy, to the fact that hidden cameras in women's toilets is a very serious issue. Yet the government/authorities are very slow in acting on the issue. Women are also more seriously judged for their actions in Korea compared to men. There are a number of societal problems women face that men don't in SK.

In recent years, especially since international movements such as 'Me Too', SK women are raising their voices against the injustices against women (in comparison to men).

A number of Korean men are disliking this a lot and are calling any woman that speaks up for themselves a feminist. Idols such as Suzy, Seolhyun and Irene have even received hate because they have read so called "feminist books". Some SK men are just shit talking women because they are very conservative and don't believe women have the right to complain about these issues etc.

I think with the changes in Korean society concerning women's roles coupled with the backlash due to many of the high profile sex scandals and "molka" issues you're bound to get push back on both sides, with some women decrying all men and in turn men decrying women who speak out.


Like feminist movements in the Western world, more aggressive denounciations of men in general is a malformation that comes as a minority of all feminist movements, though not en effect representative of the true fight for representation and rights for their gender.

In any case, I'm not worried about Korean girls being "man haters". As I'm sure most love and appreciate men just as they always have. Cant really have a functioning society if each gender hates the other.


But you know .... I do Stan Tzuyu! So did I dodge a bullet? Lol. She's Taiwanese!

I will love her even if she is an Eman Hater.

And this is why I believe that dude said all korean women hate men. Women hate disrespectful men, if you were a decent guy then you'd probably be changing your tune, sounds like he just got rejected too many times cuz he was an asshole lol.

I have noticed that this perception has started in korea for a while. It‘s truely sad that people just can’t seem to find respect for all.

Well like others have pointed out feminism is in rise in South Korea and this includes radical feminism. I think South Korea is still quite low in gender equality indexes so I think things could be done- and there is severe issues like molkas that have now gotten out. But ofc radical feminism movements don't rly help and easily all feminist get painted with them. In general feminism is in rise in Korea, but majority of korean women even those that are feminist aren't man hating.

Too much hate in the world in general. Why can't both genders just get along.
I am on kind of the same boat.

Like I don't like women, but not to the extreme ideology kind.
just the ones I ran into over the years were trash.

Starting to realise not every lassie is like that and maybe it's more to do with the town I am in, who knows.

That’s really interesting and I’d argue that, yes, women are starting to fight for themselves in South Korea.

Something that you commonly hear about South Korea is how backwards it is to the West, with its issues of gender equality. The inequality can be see in how the genders are treated in media, media portrayals, and trends within Korea.

I can think of an evident example when Irene had posted herself reading a feminist book (or something along those lines) and Korean men burnt their merch of her and hated on her for it. Generally, you can see these issues in KPOP just by looking at how Idols are styled. Putting aside, “sexy” concepts, even when a group is going for a cute look, they will commonly have ridiculously short skirts which is used to attract males whilst objectifying the idols down to sex appeal.

The real difference between the west and east like Korea, is that the West had gone through a radical feminist era. By this, I mean the suffragettes and other feminist extremist groups that went to extreme ends for gender equality, hell, even losing their lives for the rights of others. So, unless the Korean government starts to become more proactive in protecting women and erasing those prejudices, the movement of radical feminists will continue to increase.

it’s also an issue of culture, which unfortunately places women as under men. If you read any blogs of women that dated or date Korean (or Asian men in general), they will all talk about the issue of tradition and how men tend to expect things that in the west wouldn’t really be expected anymore. Then when you read blogs from males dating Asian women, they will talk about how they’re generally surprised to how traditional they can be.

I think this issue will continue to exist until the generations stop passing on these traditional ideologies and behaviour that are seen as problematic to be honest.

I was watching a web drama a while ago and it had a women who openly identified herself as a feminist. However, when she was meeting up with her boyfriend's friends, a boy and a girl, both genders were very rude to her. They said that she was a nice women and that she shouldn't be involved with 'feminist' things. It shows that both genders have prejudices on feminists.

Feminism in Korea is portrayed very similar to how feminism is portrayed in the west. People think feminists are radicals who hate men when they are only a minority. Feminists believe in equality, not power like mentioned above..
