In 1889, there was a flood in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and surrounding areas that killed an estimated 2,209 people. This is as many people as the number of American battle deaths in the whole War of 1812.
There are some things to keep in mind: disease was the biggest cause of war deaths up until WW1, so while there were only 2,200 battle deaths, the total American deaths in the war becomes more like 15,000 deaths. This also doesn’t include the allies of the US or the enemy combatants. But it’s undeniable that the flood was very devastating, both from the perspective of lives lost and monetary losses too. It remains the deadliest flood in US history. Thankfully, legislation was changed after the flood to fix some problems that led to the flood to begin with, but it is of course very unfortunately that those measures weren’t taken before.
