In the US, 2 digit interstates are numbered using a system (and 3 digit, but that’s have another system). North south are odd, east west are even, west to east are in ascending numerical order, ect. Usually the numbers are given by an association that makes sure they don’t break numbering rules (too egregiously, at least). But for I-99, congress made a federal law making the highway I-99, despite it breaking the number grid pattern. I-99 is between I-79 and I-81. Obviously you can’t realistically name it an odd number in between, so if there were no changes by congress, it would likely have been made a spur or auxiliary route (3 digit highway), due to its being a smaller and less major highway, vs a major 2 digit interstate. But congress gave it the number I-99. Why did congress do this? Because the Pennsylvania representative who asked for the highway to be built wanted it, apparently because he took a street car numbered route 99 as a kid. Which is a very logical reason right? :sanapray: Also ig he thought bigger is better, and you can’t get bigger than 99 for two digit highways. So now it’s signed into law that I-99 is I-99, and it can’t be changed unless congress repeals it. I’ll post an image where I marked the location of I-99 below, it’s light blue.
