I personally don't think it is. Lately I've been obsessed with Hello Kitty, and I have a big plushy collection. Yesterday I even went out and bought a squishmallow of the Target dog
And I like small cutesy things too. I even have a small collection of little figures from mystery bags because they are so cute


What do you guys think?

People who hate on others for liking “childish” things are really just people who are miserable Okay maybe not always, but a lot of times. Most things viewed as childish are also not inherently something for children, let alone exclusively children. We as a society just gave it that association.

I don’t think so. Personally one of my hyperfixations is Bluey. It’s a comfort show for me. I do still own some toys and plushes too (and continue to buy them).

not really unless the person is being weird about it, and by that i mean those who consume child-oriented media and then make nsfw content of the characters or sexualise them in general. i had a phase where i would watch a shit ton of cartoons because they were harmless fun after a hard day, it went to the point where those silly animated shows became actual interests of mine and the things i saw on the internet related to them were abhorrent...

sometimes, "childish" can mean comforting. Like, the only thing, or one of the only things, that comforted me while I was dealing with SA trauma was my Chimmy plushie. Whenever I was feeling it, I'd hug him as tight as I could and instantly feel better. A toy gave me comfort - and ykw? that was completely ok with my fam and friends bc they knew I was struggling at the time.

What's not okay, as @eclipsoul pointed out, is if you get hyperfixated on your toys or cartoons or what have you. That's not even a comfort thing anymore, it's an obsession.

What's not okay, as @eclipsoul pointed out, is if you get hyperfixated on your toys or cartoons or what have you. That's not even a comfort thing anymore, it's an obsession.

There's nothing wrong with having a hyperfixation/special interest in something childish, unless some person is harming themselves/others doing so. Those are ADHD and autism-specific terms, respectively, and they are uncontrollable.

yeah i should've clarified that i meant minors. there were grown adult characters in the things i watched so people treated them like the adult characters they were (and while it's not my thing, technically there is nothing wrong with that). it's people sexualising the cartoon characters who are children which disgusts me to no end and sadly still often happens.

Previous generations, including a lot of my own believe that adult hood must suck. You have to give up your favorite things and only like "adult" things. Bull crap. As long as it doesn't interfere with the things necessary to be an adult I say enjoy your self. Like have a HUGE kpop girl group collection as a 40 year old man. It's easily defensible too. The money you spend on Alcohol at the bar is what I spend on Kpop. And I don't wake up with a hangover and hating myself in the morning.

Yeah, it is unfortunate, but I just try to ignore it and curate my own experience with these things. It's all you can do really, since drawn stuff of that nature is not considered illegal

IMO, it's weirder when people don't like things. I asked one of my friends what his partner's hobby was once -- like anything? birding? cooking? staying current on all the Netflix documentaries? -- and after a very long pause, he said that his partner's hobby was "making money" and I could not relate less.

Inevitably, something that you like will seem childish to someone else. I understand that college football is very popular in parts of the States, but it seems kind of weird to me that there are grown adults obsessed with college (or sometimes even high school) games. And I bet those people think my love of D&D and video games are childish.

Life's too short to care about how your harmless hobbies make you look to others. Collect your plushies!

People who actually judge you for what you like are the problem there and calling things childish is just an easy one for people as people who have hobbies tend to have carried them from a young age which opens up to your hobby being something more marketed to children. It isn't going to stop at childish though as people who are into reading can get called nerds or into something that will be hard to find someone to convey that excitement about like stamp collecting could get called boring.

I'd rather talk to someone who has something they are passionate about than talk to someone and ask about their hobbies only to be met with silence as they struggle to think of any answer at all before just saying not really.

Not at all. I want more Pusheen plushies, and I search for old cartoons. For the past week I've been singing the 64 Zoo Lane theme song. Something about childish things is just comforting to me.
