Is not saying something just as bad as supporting something bad? (1 Viewer)

Usually relating to politically motivated topics, is it just as bad to stay silent than it is to support the “wrong” side?​

I was actually talking to somebody about this earlier. Like, with the issues in the middle east, I feel like people will get mad at me with either side I support so I've stayed neutral and haven't said anything...but then I get questioned about it by others...

When agreeing with a harmful opinion you lend support to their side. You don’t do this when staying silent, you just don’t voice an opposition. Besides, given the way some people react when someone disagrees, can anyone think it’s unreasonable to want to protect themselves?

it really depends on the context, there's a quote I like that I always think about and try to live by
"silence in the face of injustice is complicity with the oppressor"
but then again people do sometimes need to not give a response to protect themselves, which is reasonable especially if they're directly involved in the situation or it'd become a danger to voice what they truly think or believe

I don't think that people should be forced to talk about stuff if they don't want to.
Lots of people take their escape on the internet because they want to flee the daily life and thus not talk about heavy topics.
Even in real life, if people don't want to share their opinion, they shouldn't.

I'm someone who doesn't speak my opinions on controversial subjects because I don't like fighting. I may have my opinions but I'm just not a fan of politics and fueling the fire. One thing you would see me fight passionately about is sustainability and taking care of the environment but that's about it.

imo I think they're equally as bad. You support a bad topic, shit hits the fan. You stay silent, shit hits the fan. It's pretty much a catch-22 imo bc either way, you're screwed.
